Wingfield Manor is a ruined country house, three times a prison cell for Mary
Queen of Scots in the 16th century. The harsh conditions Mary was held in at Bolton
Castle and her resulting "grief of the spleen" led to her removal to a more comfortable
prison at Wingfield Manor. Today you can climb the tower for magnificent views
and explore the ruins of what was once a grand country mansion. The site has also
been a popular film location.
